Lander University was founded by Methodist
clergyman Samuel Lander in 1872 as Williamston Female College in Williamston,
S.C. It remained a private institution for 26 years. In 1898, the college
gained the support of the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist
Episcopal Church, South. In 1904, the college was relocated to Greenwood,
S.C., and was renamed Lander College in honor of its founder.
On July 1, 1973, Lander College came under the control of the Board
of Trustees of the State Colleges of South Carolina, making Lander
a state-supported college. On July 1, 1992, by action of the Board
of Trustees, the institution became Lander University. |

| Lander
University offers more than 60 areas of undergraduate study as well
as a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) with a concentration in
art and a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in elementary education. Through
the Lander/Clemson Graduate Studies Center, students may pursue the
M.Ed. in community counseling, school counseling or educational administration.
Students benefit from the flexibility of online courses and distance
learning. Two programs are offered completely online: the R.N. to
B.S.N. completion option and the health care management certificate.
Bachelor's degrees in sociology, sociology with an emphasis in criminal
justice, psychology with an emphasis in counseling, and political
science with an emphasis in pre-law and public administration are
